The Lutheran Parish in Tomaszow Mazowiecki is a part of Warsaw Diocese of the Lutheran Church of the Augsburg Confession in Poland, which has derived from the tradition of the sixteenth-century reformation.
The history of lutheran presence in the region of Tomaszow dates back to the 19th century, so to the beginnings of the town itself. The founder of Tomaszow invited Prussian settlers so that they help with the extension and industrialization of the city. Many of them were lutherans and they joined in the creation of common heritage that is today known as Tomaszow Mazowiecki.
After their arrival, the lutherans started organizing their religious and community life. Already in 1823 they started building the neoclassical Holy Trinity Church, which can be seen on Kosciuszko square till today. At the same time, the vicarage and the lutheran school were built. Building of the church finished in 1839. However, the parish had been founded earlier, already in July 1830. From then on the number of lutherans was increasing continuously. It became therefore necessary to build a new, much bigger church.
The plan of an Warsaw architect, Pawel Hofer, was chosen. The brick mass of the church with three towers was covered initially with red ceramic tile. The highest tower of the Tomaszow lutheran church has 60 meters and was the tallest point in the whole city at the time when the church was built. The Saviour's Church was consecrated solemnly on 15. August 1902.
From the very beginning the parish was active on several areas. Singers associations, choirs, sport and youth organizations, women circle as well as an orchestra came into being. In 1908 also a care facility was established. The number of parish members increased up to 12000, however these glory days for the parish were brutally interrupted by the outbreak of Second World War. The lutheran community in Tomaszow shared its lot with many other lutheran parishes in Poland. Pastors were arrested and sent to concentration camps, whereas postwar members' registers became much shorter than they used to be.
The parish came never back to its pre-war state. However, the field of its activity has not diminished. Concerts, exhibitions, trips and presentations are still arranged. Services take place regularly as well as other meetings, also social welfare work is organized. However, the most important thing seems to be the fact that the consciousness of maintaining a past heritage and a need to expand it for God's glory have never passed.
